FDA and Food Safety in 2022: Preparing for New Rules in a New Era

For 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prioritized renewed investment in core food safety programs that protect and promote public health. This includes the implementation of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint to reduce the number of illnesses attributed to FDA-regulated goods. This plan outlines realistic goals to enhance traceability, improve predictive analytics, respond more rapidly to outbreaks, address new business models, reduce contamination, and foster the development of stronger food safety cultures.

This approach will build on the progress FSMA has made in creating a risk-based, prevention-oriented regulatory framework, while also leveraging the use of new and emerging technologies to create a safer and more digital, traceable system. In fact, the pandemic accelerated the need for many of these technologies.

Based on four key elements, its implementation will reshape the future of food and food safety. Food and beverage manufacturers need to understand each of these elements and how they can alter their business, and what steps they should take to prepare now.
