College Credit - Kansas State University

Beginning fall 2006, students can enroll for 14 hours of college credit from Kansas State University when they attend AIB's Baking Science and Technology 16-week resident course, the only course of its kind in the United States.

The credit program is the result of a partnership between AIB International and KSU's Department of Grain Science and Industry.

"Manhattan, Kansas, is home of two baking and grain science related institutions that offer programs you can't find anywhere else in the world. Kansas State's Grain Science and Industry Department and AIB's Baking Science and Technology programs are each one of a kind. It's only natural for us to become allies in making college credit available for the future leaders of our industries," said AIB President Jim Munyon.

The resident baking course provides intense and effective training that prepares the graduate to assume a position of responsibility and has long been regarded the baking industry's finishing school. Students spend each morning in lectures that are reinforced hands-on each afternoon in AIB's state-of-the-art laboratories designed specifically for bread, cake and sweet goods, and cookie production. The curriculum was first created in 1919 and has been updated continuously to keep pace with rapid developments in baking technology and automation.

The course just received accreditation renewal from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Grain Science and Industry program at Kansas State University is the only program of its kind in the United States. Companies from all over come to Manhattan, Kansas for research and training support in baking, milling and feed production as well as bio-processing and bio- materials development from grain production.

"This is a huge step forward for AIB and the baking industry," said Dr. Kirk O'Donnell, AIB Vice President, Education. "The baking science course has long been recognized for the value of its curriculum and for its history of producing future leaders for the baking industry. Making it possible to earn college credit for this course recognizes its rigor and at the same time illustrates the modern baking industry's realization that people who will lead the baking industry in the future need more than just a practical education."

Both Kansas State students enrolled in the baking science and management curriculum and baking industry professionals qualify to earn the 14 credit hours. One tuition rate will apply for all students.

Students seeking college credit will be enrolled in Kansas State's Division of Continuing Education and will pay the Kansas State tuition, plus the AIB resident course tuition of $11,325. A limited number of AIB tuition scholarships will be available for qualified baking professionals who want the college credit.
