Sources of information on publicly held companies


The EDGAR database provides access to company documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 1997 Economic Census Reports

Replaces the Census of Manufacturers reports.    Topics include: Retail Bakeries, Commercial Bakeries, Confectionery Manufacturing From Purchased Chocolate, Cookie and Cracker Manufacturing, Chocolate and Confectionery Manufacturing From Cacao Beans, Dry Pasta Manufacturing, Flour Mixes and Dough Manufacturing From Purchased Flour, Frozen Cake, Pie, and Other Pastry Manufacturing, and Tortilla Manufacturing.  Reports on other categories are also available.

Statistical Analysis


"Pizza Freeze," by Eric Schroder in Milling & Baking News, June 28, 2011 (Vol. 90, No. 9), p. 30.  According to data obtained from SymphonyIRI Group., frozen pizza sales were down 3% for the 52 weeks ending May 15 to $3,126,405,000 compared to the same time period a year ago.  The average price for frozen pizza for the same time period was $3.04 per unit an increase of 11%  The DiGiono brand of frozen pizza accounted for more than 5% of category sales.

"Delivering Innovation," by Jen Roth in Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery, March 2011 (Vol. 100, No. 3), p. 32, 34-37.  Manufacturers of frozen pizza continue to find new creative toppings to meet today's changing consumer preference. Comments on trends in this category are included from Chris Leising, brand director of Freschetta, at Schwan's Consumer Brands, Inc.; Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patron; Giacomo Falucca, president and CEO at Palermo Villa, Inc.

"The Pie's the Limit," by Molly V. Strzelecki in Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery, January 2009 (Vol. 98, No. 1), p. 38-40.  The frozen pizza category is said to be "recession proof."  The reason for the success of the category is due to the fact that as more consumers eat at home they turn to the convenience of frozen food. Frozen pizza is considered "a delicious, reasonably priced meal option for families and one- and two-person households to enjoy at home." Growing trends include: popularity of thin crust pizza, convenience, great taste, health and wellness, portability, price sensitivity and serving size options (especially popular are single-serve options.) Comments on how the economy has affected frozen pizza sales are provided by Tim Cofer, president of Kraft Pizza Co. ; Joe Perrino, chief executive officer, Home Run Inn; Mike Harvard, vice president of marketing at Newman's Own; Dan Hammer, senior vice president of marketing for Schwan's; Vincent Fantegrossi, president and CEO of Richelieu Foods.

"Eating Solor Just Got Tastier," by Erin Rigik in Baking Management, October 2008 (Vol. 12, No. 10), p. 10, 12. Focuses on how frozen pizza manufacturers are "capitalizing" on the trend that more consumers prefer to eat dinner at home after a busy week. Products that have been introduced aimed at this trend included pizza for one products introduced by Kraft foods under the DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen brands. Includes comments on the frozen pizza category made by Brigette Wolf, brand manager , For One pizza, Kraft Foods and Gina Bolger, director of marketing, Home Run Inn. Includes a table with sales of products in the fresh, frozen and refrigerated bakery products for the 52 weeks ending August 10, 2008.

"A Slice of Innovation", by Kathie Canning in Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery, January 2008 (Vol. 97, No. 1), p. 24, 26, 28. New product introductions in frozen pizza include "gourmet pizza" made with "upscale ingredients" and the introduction of new crust varieties. The new product introduction have frozen pizza now competing for consumer dollars spent on pizza made by pizzerias. Notes new product introductions by new varieties by Kraft Pizza Co., under the California Pizza Kitchen brand, Bellatoira thin crust pizza, Nestle Prepared Foods Co's introduction of flatbread varieties under the Stouffer's Corner Bistro brand, Includes comments on the trends in the frozen pizza category by Steve Warnert, director of sensory for Amy's Kitchen; Brian Olson, senior director, pizza category for Schwan's Consumer Brands, and Dave Ramsay, vice president at Baernatello's Pizza.

"Pizzeria-style Pizza Reigns as Most Popular Frozen Pie" by Erin Rigik in Baking Management, July 2007 (Vol. 11, No. 7), p. 12-13. Discusses the continuing consumer trend towards purchasing frozen pizza products "with the appearance and flavor of restaurant-made pies." Comments on pizza trends are given by Christine Dahm, vice president of marketing at Nestle Prepared Foods; John Boswell, senior vice-president and general manager, pizza category, Kraft Foods. Includes a table with dollar and unit sales for bakery products in the fresh, frozen, and refrigerated categories and a table with dollar and unit sales for the Top 10 frozen pizza products.

"Pizza Pandemic," by Maria Pilar Clark in Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery, " March 2006 (Vol. 95, No. 3), p. 32, 34-36.  Product trends in the frozen pizza category include: organic options, thin crust, and whole wheat crust. Comments on the category are given by: Anthony P., Raucci, senior vice-president at Richelieu Foods, Inc., Mark Jansen, vice president of product strategy for Schwan's Consumer Brands North America Inc.; Katie Williams , brand director at DiGiorno. Includes a table with dollar sales of frozen pizza brands for the 52 weeks ending January 22, 2006.

"Innovation Key to Frozen Pizza Category's Coninuted Growth," in Bakery Management, June 2005 (Vol. 9, No. 6), p. 18-20. According to supermarket scanner data obtained from Information Resources Inc., the frozen pizza category had a 2.3% growth for the 52 week period of time that ended April 17, 2005. This growth posted sales of $2.62 billion. Includes comments from Darci Eckermann, director of marketing services at Schwan Food Co., and Peter Deros, president and chief executive officer at Donini Inc., a Canadian pizza manufacturer.   Includes a table with the Top 10 frozen pizza brands and a second table with data for products in the Fresh, Frozen and Refrigerated Bakery Proudcts categories.

Pizza Pizzazz" by Holly Bradley in Baking & Snack, April 2005 (Vol. 27, No. 3), p. 47-48, 50, 52, 54. Introductions of new products in the frozen pizza category offer consumers an increase in quality, variety, and convenience. The author discusses how sales are rising. Includes a table on the top ten vendors and a table on the top ten brands.  According to data obtained from Information Resources Inc., the frozen pizza category grew 1.6% 5o $2.6 billion for the 52 weeks that ended February 20, 2005. Comments from  Darci Eckermann, director of marketing services, Schwan's Consumer Brands North America are included.

"Pizza Renaissance,"  Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery, February 2005 (Vol. 94, No. 2), p. 12-15.    This segment of the market watch column focuses on the frozen pizza category. The growing trend in the category is for a frozen pizza that is " fresh-tasting, portion-conscious, and ethnically inspired".  Includes comments from key individuals in the pizza industry including Michael Pellegrino, senior vice president and general manager at Kraft Pizza Company; Darci Eckermann, director of marketing services for Schwan's Consumer brands, North America; and Angela Ginex, frozen food marketing manager at Home Run Inn.

2005 Pizza Statistics

"Fending Off Challenges, Finding New Successes," Milling & Baking News, May 4, 2004 (Vol. 83, No. 10), p. 25-26, 28, 30. This product perspective article focuses on the frozen pizza market According to statistics obtained from Information Services Inc. frozen pizza sales increased 2.8% for the 52 weeks that ended December 28, 2003 compared to the same time period a year ago. Includes tables that include dollar sales, percentage of change of sales from a year ago, dollar share, unit sales, and percentage of unit sales change from a year ago for the top ten pizza brands and vendors. Comments made by various industry leaders regarding this market segment are given. Individuals Brian Nau, vice-president of product stategy.
