Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS)
Each day, there are more and more concerns regarding the safety and integrity of ingredients used
in animal feed materials. This is especially relevant in Europe where the outbreak of BSE (mad cow
disease) caused scientists to consider animal feed ingredients as a principal cause. In recent years,
the human food chain in Europe has also been contaminated by the introduction of dioxins into animal
feed. The economic and health risks associated with these scares can be devastating to agriculture,
industry and the human food chain.
Recognizing that the same risks apply anywhere in the world, AIBI has joined forces with the UK and
European specialist PAI, who have developed with the help of the European Animal Feed Industry, the
internationally accepted standard FEMAS (Feed Materials Assurance Scheme) for the integrity and safe
delivery of animal feed materials. AIBI is pleased to have the right to audit animal feed ingredient
suppliers against this standard both domestically and internationally.
